Jack-o’-lanterns are a Halloween tradition that originated from an Irish myth about a man named Stingy Jack. He was a greedy man who tricked the Devil twice.

First by tricking the devil to change in to a coin to pay both some drinks, where Jack put the coin near a silver cross that prevented the devil to change back.

The second time, by tricking the devil to grab a fruit from the top of a tree, where Jack carved a cross in the bark, that prevented the devil to climb down.

As a punishment, when Jack died. The devil doomed him to roam the Earth forever with only a burning coal inside of a carved-out turnip to light his way. And that is how the jack-o’-lantern was born.
